2004 Conference: 11-12 November CONFERENCE OUTLINE

This year’s conference will be held in the Bridge House Hotel, Tullamore on the 11th and 12th of November. The theme this year is Strategic Planning.

The overwhelming response from last year’s Conference was the recognition that we, as Health Science Library and Information professionals, needed to go on growing and developing, particularly in terms of our professional development.

However, responsibility for professional development lies ultimately with the Health Science Information professional. We are an extremely generous profession, and tend to put the needs of our clients above our own. But we sometimes lack the professional planning skills to anticipate or bring about change, either in our place of work or from the point of view of our own professional development.

This year’s Conference seeks to address this need by focusing on Strategic Planning Skills.

Strategic Planning is a process, and a discipline, which enables us, both personally and as a group, to be:

Systematic in our analysis of issues
Specific in identification of goals and objectives
Logical in prioritizing the specific actions we need to take to make things happen

As was the case last year, the Conference will be a mix of formal and participatory sessions (together with Banquet and Socialising at the bar!), which will enable you to:

Obtain a grasp of the basic Strategic Planning concepts
Gain experience in working with the terminology and processes, so that you can apply them yourself.

Once mastered, the planning process is relevant across the entire spectrum of our professional activity, and speakers at the Conference from the NHS Clinical Governance Support Organization, NHS Information Authority and TFPL (a Knowledge and Information Management Consultancy) will share their insights and experience into this.

Speakers from Ireland and the UK will address the conference. The fee for the conference, which will cover accomodation on the night of the 11th of November, workshops, coffee and a banquet dinner, will b €280.

The AGM of the IHSLG will be held on the afternoon of the 12th of November.

2003 Conference
