Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland Clinical Informationist Ref HR8028

Applications are invited from experienced professional librarians with a background in healthcare for a contract post of Clinical Informationist (Clinical Librarian) in the Department of Medicine at Beaumont Hospital. This is a one year Project - a Pilot study (with a possible extension to two years) to introduce the concept of a Clinical Informationist service to Ireland and to evaluate the contribution of this service to clinical decision making and healthcare outcomes in an Irish teaching hospital. The Clinical Informationist (Clinical Librarian) will search, filter and provide the best available evidence from the medical and scientific research literature to the Medical Team at the point of care. Funding for the project has been provided by the Charitable Infirmary Charitable Trust and Beaumont Hospital. The successful candidate will be a university graduate with a postgraduate qualification in Library and Information studies. A background in healthcare is desirable and experience of medical and scientific research literature would be an advantage. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience in a clinical setting and post qualification informatics training. The Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) is currently recruiting a Temporary Half-time Library Assistant (Grade III) based in the Library of the National Blood Centre in James's Hospital Campus in Dublin 8.

The position is on a fixed term, temporary basis for 10 months from Oct 2007 to August 2008.

The position is also half-time on a week on - week off basis from Wednesday to Tuesday with the start date of Wednesday 24th October.

Essential Criteria:

    * Computer literacy and a proven training record of PC Skills
    * Highly developed organisational and administrative skills with strong attention to detail
    * Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    * Excellent communication and interpersonal skills,
    * Ability to work effectively with all levels of personnel.
    * Enthusiasm and an interest in their work and a willingness to learn.

Desirable Criteria:
 
    * Experience of searching medical databases such as PubMed
    * Experience in a Library or similar environment.
    * Familiarity with electronic sources of information, online journals, web documents etc.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities :

    * Assist in the effective and efficient operation and administration of the IBTS Library.
    * Circulate material to staff daily as part of the Library's Current Awareness Service
    * Processing of journals, books and other library materials.
    * Organise and manage the Library's interlibrary loan service.
    * Assist on research projects, medical search queries, sourcing articles.
    * General library duties such as photocopying, filing, ordering materials.
    * Answer varied queries from IBTS staff, from other organisations and from the public.

Dublin Dental School & Hospital  (Deadline: Aptil 27 2007)
The Dublin Dental School & Hospital is seeking a Part-time Library Assistant. Working as part of the library team, the successful candidate will provide effective and efficient library services to the staff and students of the Dublin Dental School & Hospital.

This position is a temporary contract until June 2007. The hours for this post are 5pm - 10pm, Tuesday and Thursday during term time (Total of 10 hours per week). There is potential for the contract to be renewed after the summer break (i.e. commencement of Michaelmas Term, 27th August 2007).
The key duties for this post are:

  • Delivery of front-line service to the Dublin Dental School & Hospital community
  • Routine counter duties including loan circulations 
  • Sorting and shelving of library material 
  • Assisting the library team with collection maintenance 
  • Answering general reference queries 
  • Supervising activities in the library 
  • End of day procedures

GRADUATE LIBRARY TRAINEE

This position would be suitable for applicants for the Masters or Diploma in Information and Library Studies courses, wishing to gain quality work experience.

The person would gain experience of a wide range of library duties using the library’s computerised systems, CD-ROM databases and the internet. Information about the Library is available on the OPW web site www.opw.ie.

The successful candidate must have a degree, and an interest in pursuing a career in librarianship and/or information management. Good IT skills are desirable.

The post will be for a maximum of six months. The salary will be €414.43 per week.

Annual leave - 10 working days in six months.

Hours of attendance will be 34 hours 45 minutes net per week, Monday to Friday.
